Child Bride in Islam

While civil society activists have continuously advocated for banning child brides in marriages in all communities, the relevant authorities have often shown reluctance to act, citing that such practices are cultural in nature and are too sensitive to be curbed by law. While child marriages are common in many conservative communities of different ethnic groups, however, in the Muslim communities, the truth for such reluctance lies in the fact that such practices are more religious in nature than cultural. Child brides in marriages to adults are sanctioned by Islam because Muhammad, the founder of Islam did it in his marriage to Aisah and also the Shariah not only allows it but also specified in detail the nature of such a relationship.


In stark contrast, the bible says children are a blessing from God in many places. For example, Psalm 127:3-5 says, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.” And in Matthew 18:10 Jesus said, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.” Clearly, children are very important to God and we should love and protect them.
